The Stockton Concert Band will resume rehearsals on August 18, 2009, meeting Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in Holt Center Room 113 at San Joaquin Delta College, 5151 Pacific Avenue, Stockton. Bring your instrument and plan to arrive early in order to find a parking place!

In order to be a member of the Band, you must register for the Fall 2009 Semester. The easiest way to register is via San Joaquin Delta College’s online registration program. If you would like to receive one unit of college credit and a letter grade (A – F), register for Music 028 (Course No. 76068). If you prefer to audit the course and not receive college credit (you may earn a maximum of four credits), register for Music 128 (Course No. 63897).

If you have not previously enrolled in a Delta College class or more than two semesters have elapsed since you last attended the college, you must reapply for admission following the step-by-step directions set forth on Delta’s website.

High school students, please note: You are invited to be a member of the Stockton Concert Band and earn one unit of credit from Delta College, but you must be concurrently enrolled in your high school’s band and obtain permission from both your principal and high school band director. Mr. Holton will provide you with the required forms at the first rehearsal. It is your responsibility to obtain those individuals’ signatures and return the completed forms to Mr. Holton.

Questions? Feel free to contact Mr. Holton via e-mail (aholton at deltacollege dot edu) or speak with him at the first rehearsal. He will be happy to answer any questions you may have and assist you with the application and/or registration process.

Dane Burg

Dane Burg will be our special guest artist this Thursday, May 14, 2009, at 7:30 p.m. for “Rhapsody in Blue.”  We hope you will join us in the Atherton Auditorium on the San Joaquin Delta College campus for this final concert of our 2008-09 season!

Also joining us will be the Lincoln High School Band under the direction of Jorge Munoz and Jay Mason.

The Stockton Concert Band will perform:

  • Second Prelude by George Gershwin
  • Variation on Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland
  • Cuban Overture by George Gershwin
Conductor Art Holton leads guest artist Dane Burg and the Stockton Wind Ensemble through a rehearsal of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue."

The Stockton Wind Ensemble will perform Frank Ticheli’s Blue Shades, as well as Rhapsody in Blue, the George Gershwin classic, with Burg at the keyboard. Burg holds Bachelor and Masters degree from the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. He has performed with numerous chamber groups, as well as the Santa Rosa and Napa Valley Symphonies. For the past ten years, he has served as the Pastor of Worship Arts with Lodi’s First Baptist Church.

All of the evening’s featured groups will join together for a grand finale performance of Down A Country Lane by Aaron Copland.

Tickets are available now at the Delta College Box Office. Admission is $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for seniors and students.

The Stockton Concert Band supports and encourages you to attend the upcoming performance of the Herald Trumpets, the official fanfare ensemble for the President of the United States, with the Lodi Community Band. Based in Washington, D.C., the Herald Trumpets are part of “Pershing’s Own,” the United States Army Band that performs at historic international and national events, including Presidential inaugurations, to welcome visiting dignitaries such as the Queen of England and Pope, and at Olympic ceremonies. They regularly perform for the Kennedy Center Honors and the annual holiday celebrations “A Capitol Fourth,” “Christmas in Washington” and “The National Memorial Day Concert.”

Don’t Miss This “Once-in-a-Lifetime” Opportunity

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Lodi audiences to experience the Herald Trumpets in person. The Herald Trumpets are truly a national treasure,” according to Lodi Community Band Director Robert E. Gross. “They simply do not perform on the West Coast, with rare exceptions.” Indeed, the Herald Trumpets have not performed in California since they performed during President Ronald Reagan’s funeral in Southern California.

On Sunday, May 3, 2009, the Herald Trumpets will join the Lodi Community Band on stage in the Charlene Powers Lange Performing Arts Theatre at Hutchins Street Square for two concerts at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The Lodi Community Band will also welcome the 40-piece 59th Army Band from Sacramento, the “Governor’s Own.” Each of the three groups will perform individually and en mass, placing a total of approximately 85 musicians on stage.

Tickets are $20.00 each and available now from the Hutchins Street Square Box Office, either online or by telephone: (209) 333-5550.
